Applying for the right FSSAI Food licence in
Nagaland
Food Business Operators have to mandatorily receive their FSSAI Food Licences according to
a rule passed by the Government. Applying for the licence allows the FSSAI to conduct reviews
and make sure that the establishment meets their basic requirements to be safe for the public.
The main reason for this is the standardisation of processes for Food Operators, and the
protection of their clientele from adulteration or sub-par food items.
Details of a Food Business Operator
According to the Food Safety and Standard Act of 2006, Food Business Operators are any
private or public establishments that might either work profit or charity. They could be working at
any stage of manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution of food,
imports and including food services, sale of food, or food ingredients. Additionally, they have
more roles and responsibilities toward achieving food safety in their business and for their
customers.
Procedure for FSSAI Registration
- FSSAI Registration starts by submitting Form A or Form B to the Food and Safety
Department. These forms differ depending on the establishment and their turnover and
scale, implying they receive different licences as well.
- The Food and Safety Department can accept or decline an application in an hour, after
its submission and have to inform the applicant, in writing, the reasons for declining the
application.
- After accepting the application, the Department permits a registration certificate with a
unique number and photo of the applicant.
- The Food Business Operators must display the certificate of registration at the place of
business during the business hours. It should be visible, as well.
Various types of FSSAI Licences
The licenses that FBOs apply for differ based on the scale of operation of the food business and
the number of branches they have across India.
- FSSAI Registration Central License
Food business operators like Importers, 100% Export Oriented Units, large manufacturers,
operators in the Central Government agencies, airports, seaports are required to obtain a
Central Food License. The Central Government issues the Central license and FBOs have to
apply and receive one from their head office, especially if they have operations in more than one
Indian State. Finally, FBOs with annual turnovers of more than 20 crores get one of these
licences.
- FSSAI Registration State License
Small to medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, marketers,
distributors need an FSSAI State License. The State Government issues the State License and
applies to single establishment businesses, usually working with a turnover of more than 12
lakh.
- FSSAI Registration
Food business operators including, petty food manufacturers and small manufacturers, storage
units, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors require this type of registration if their annual
turnover is less than 12 lacs. The State Government issues the FSSAI Registration, and it varies
based on eligibility, allowing an FBO to fall under the State Licence or Registration license.
The validity of an FSSAI license extends from one to five years, which depends on the Indian
State where the FBO applies for their FSSAI licence, or the number of years chooses. The more
years selected, the higher the cost of the license will be but in the long run, applying for a longer
duration works out cheaper. As per the FSSAI guidelines, applicants need to apply for the
renewal of the license, 30 days before expiration, since its renewal takes about 60 days.
