The Government made it mandatory for all Food Business Operators to apply for a Food Licence if they are planning on running a business in India. To get a Food Licence, people have to register with the FSSAI, under one of three different types of licences. The only challenge becomes knowing the criteria to apply for the right licence.
The three brackets of Food Licence
The criteria that dictate which of the three licences that a company should register under are their annual turnover and the number of branches they are planning on opening in other States, across the country. Additionally, a few more requirements are depending on the type of business they are planning on running.
Applicants might have to change or upgrade their Food Licence depending on the way the company scales. These changes have to be mentioned on the Food Licence and to the FSSAI. For instance, if the turnover of a company crosses the turnover bracket that it initially applied under, it might need a new licence. The same rules apply when dealing with companies that decide to change the exact vertical that they were working under. For instance, if a company was running a restaurant and now they want to start a food transportation business, they cannot use the same FSSAI licence number, they have to make this change known to the FSSAI. The FSSAI usually decides the next steps to and either makes a change to the current FSSAI licence or asks the FBO to register for a new licence.
If an FBO has to modify their licence, after filling out the forms based on the modification, they have to submit a couple of documents. These are the documents needed when modifying a licence.
After submitting all the documents, FBOs have to apply for a registration certificate as well. According to law, the certificate has to be visible at the venue, for all who enter it to see. Here are the documents and details to be submitted for the registration certificate.
