The Government has made it mandatory for all Food Business Operators to coordinate and register for a Food licence through the FSSAI. This process can be quite challenging, with multiple aspects when it comes to the licence making process that has to be tackled correctly. If there are errors along the way, there can be issues for the Food Business Operator including, fines and penalties.
Food business operators (FBO) are private or public undertakings, used for profit or not, handling activities relating to any stage of manufacture, processing, packaging, storage, transportation, distribution of food, imports and including food services, sale of food, or food ingredients. They additionally have a multitude of roles and responsibilities toward achieving food safety in their business.
The Government hit the brakes on one of their projects, supposed to come up in the state. The Rajasthan Government aimed at ensuring hygienic and safe ‘prasad’ at places of worship. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) brought all religious places including temples, mosques, churches and gurudwaras under the ambit of its rules last year implying that prasad, the offering, served to the devotees met food safety standards. Project BHOG, which stood for Blissful Hygienic Offering to God) was supposed to have launched last year but was put on hold fearing that it may hurt the sentiments people in Rajasthan. The health department of Rajasthan even took up training vendors and handlers offering prasad, inside and outside the places of worship, but this too was put on hold.
FSSAI Registration is started by submitting Form A to the Food and Safety Department. The Department can either accept or reject the application, in an hour after it's submission, but have to provide their reason for rejecting it, to the applicant in writing. If they accept the application, the Department permits and grants a registration certificate, with a registration number, and a photo of the applicant.
Food Business Operators have to display their certificate of registration at the place of business during the business hours.
Depending on the annual turnover of the FBO, they should apply for the right licence.
